The Curaçao national football team made its World Cup debut on Sunday with a 7-1 loss to Germany. The team of coach Dick Advocaat started strong, but could not prevent Germany from taking an early lead. Felix Nmecha put the Germans ahead after just six minutes and it eventually became 7-1. Livano Comenencia managed to score the equalizer in the 21st minute, but after that Germany ran away with the game. Nico Schlotterbeck and Kai Havertz made it 2-1 and 3-1, after which Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav further increased the score. It was eventually a tough World Cup debut for Curaçao, which was somewhat expected. Curaçao will play its second group match against Ecuador on June 21 and will face Ivory Coast on June 25. Coach Advocaat was curious before the game whether his team would be able to play freely against a power like Germany. The answer was 'yes', but eventually Germany was too strong. The team of Advocaat got the 4-1 from Musiala just a minute after the restart. Where Curaçao had come out so bravely in the first half, there was now a risk of a thrashing. And Germany showed no mercy to the island team. It was eventually a tough lesson for Curaçao, but the team will have to try to learn from it. Curaçao has two more games to go in the group stage and will have to try to pick up points to have a chance of reaching the next round.
